Dr. Kawango Agot, the Founder, Director and CEO Nyanza Initiative for Girls Education and Empowerment (NIGEE), a local non-profit that was started in 2011 with an aim of re-integrating girls who had dropped out of school due to fees, pregnancies and other factors back to the formal education system.  This she did without donor funds. She, alongside her staff sourced for business opportunities and took girls to school with the proceeds. Operating in the 4 Counties of Luo Nyanza, NIGEE has since grown to a fully-fledged Girl Empowerment Centre with its own subsidized Vocational Training Institute, SGBV safe house, and a Programs wing.

The organization has also been able to access donor funds and implemented different projects, including, legal and policy advocacy, Anti-FGM advocacy, including hosting a camp for the girls who run away from home during the period, SRHR advocacy, Girl Led Media among others. https://nigee.org/ , Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nigeeorg?igsh=ZHNyams1Y3pyM2Jm.

This incredible lady has touched many lives, taking over 500 girls through the formal education system without donor funds, and other hundreds through vocational training, provided employment opportunities for countless others and inspired people to drive change within their communities using their own resources. She does deserve to be celebrated. Links to her LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kawango-agot-phd-mph-mphil-faas-7230b849/

Weeks ago, we lost our Mama Prof Kawango alias "Nyar Agot". I remember Prof, not so much for her academic acumen, but for the values she inculcated in us - honesty and integrity. Today we remember a woman who embodied humility, sincerity, peace and love. A walking dictionary, she had an affinity for the word puzzle. I am like the chip off the 'old block', walking a well trodden path, of a woman whose shoe lace I cannot untie, she who walked with giants, read books unread and authored journals as well. A celebrated researcher of our time. I can't but laud your presence yonder among heavenly sages. Continue resting in bliss Nyar Agot, Mama, Mama Gift . We love you.
