Kuria Girls Project

“Kuria Girls Project” – (Supported by Global Fund for Children)

The project aims at ending female genital mutilation and child marriage in the Kuria community.

NIGEE aims to achieve this objective by working with the local community members and leaders to identify men who can spearhead culture change from within the community, especially among the Kuria Council of Elders, opinion leaders and older women.

  • This is a 2 year project which was initiated in October 2016 and runs to September 2018 and is being implemented in Kuria East and Kuria West sub-counties of Migori County. The project has so far re-enrolled back to school 45 girls. NIGEE also conducts anti-FGM/end child marriage campaigns, including providing psychosocial support and motivational talks at the rescue centers.
  • The project has conducted 2 academic camps during school holidays targeting 72 school going girls in April 2018
  • NIGEE also conducts girls’ forums which bring together the girls being supported by the program, their parents/guardians, various stakeholders and opinion leaders in the community; it offers the girls an opportunity to share their experiences, be mentored through various invited professional guests who give motivational talks and to help sensitize the parents against perpetrating FGM.
