NIGEE Girls'

NIGEE’s “Second Chance” Project (supported by locally-raised funds)

The main aim of the project is to re-enroll needy girls who dropped out of school due to pregnancy, marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM), back to school and ensure they get quality education.

Between 2013 and 2018, NIGEE has re-enrolled 483 girls back to school through local fundraising efforts, specifically profits from our modest business ventures and other innovative fundraising approaches including selling underwears on the streets and in schools, selling branded t-shirts and other customized items, negotiating for sponsorship through local bursary funds, organizing marathon/walk–cum-fundraising, and sourcing for tenders from schools and County Governments. Former NIGEE beneficiaries and NIGEE staff also voluntarily contribute from their salaries and allowances, raising about KShs. 220,000 every year towards school fees for girls.

The education scholarship package includes:

  1. School fees subsidy (75-85% paid by NIGEE, 15-25% paid by the beneficiary’s parent/ guardian).
  2. Learning materials such as stationery, school uniforms, text books and exercise books.
  3. Personal effects (transport to school, pocket money, sanitary towels, etc.).
  4. Psychosocial support (school visits, home visits, mentorship and career guidance).

Distribution of beneficiaries by year

We have employed 22 of the beneficiaries who graduated from secondary school in unskilled positions as they raise funds to enroll in short courses to increase their employability. They are responsible for screening new girls to be supported by the program.
