NIGEE Girls’ Empowerment Centre (GEC)–Vocational skills training centre(Globalgiving, UK)

NIGEE established a Girls’ Empowerment Centre (GEC) in Kisumu - an innovative learning centre to deliver vocational training skills

The skill aims at addressing the needs of girls living in in informal settlements who have completed or dropped out of high schools to make them employable or give them opportunity to start up a business venture. The GEC targets 500 girls and offers trainings in computers, hairdressing, dressmaking and videography.

The centre is unique because girls are allowed to bring their children along when coming for lessons. The centre also acts as a safe space for girls during school holidays where they get to be coached on life skills, HIV, reproductive health and gender based violence. So far we have empowered 410 AGYW.

Through the Globalgiving crowd funding platform, NIGEE entered a partnership with a Shoe Company - Shoes by Shahrazad in UK – which has donated generously towards procurement of GEC equipment such as sewing machines, salon equipment and computers.

The Center has also provided safe space/shelter for over 32 survivors of sexual abuse, gender based violence, child marriage and FGM. It also provides a space for school-going NIGEE girls who do not have stable homes.
